Side-scrolling space-shooters of the 90’s were ruthless. Checkpoints were few and far between and the sheer amount of enemies you’d battle would be relentless. 1993 Space Machine takes us back in time to a time when games weren’t meant to be easy and tutorials were portrayed by a single window showing you what powerups did when picked up. 1993 Space Machine Gameplay and Review on YouTube
I remember as a kid playing games, like R-Type and Fantasy Zone, and having a hell of a hard time progressing beyond a certain point. These games were cut-throat, but a good way to introduce me to future games that eased off in difficulty as time went by. 1993 Space Machine throws you back into the hyper-coloured shorts of your 90’s self and tests your skills in a way they’ve not been tested for over twenty years.
1993 Space Machine provides you with a great deal of ships to choose from, however the only difference they have from one another is the way they look. Different weaponry provides slight advantages and help you overcome sections of the game you thought were otherwise improbable (not impossible).
With a decent amount of levels and different bosses with differing mechanics, 1993 Space Machine does a good job with giving you a nostalgic gaming experience. However, I feel the story itself is a bit lacking and could even be taken out of the game altogether.

Score
3 stars – nostalgic space-shooter that doesn’t stray very far from most games of the same genre
Pluses:
- Genuine difficult retro gaming experience
- Heaps of customisation in terms of space ships and weaponry
- Awesome retro music
Minuses:
- Feels a bit samey as every other space-shooter past and present
- Different space ships don’t provide different features, only aesthetics
- Story feels a bit unnecessary and takes a back seat to gameplay
- Difficulty might turn some gamers off
