Toxic Romance is a very dark comic set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The story follows an individual wearing a jacket with the word ‘SWAT’ on it. Immediately you can tell this character is deeply troubled and has an addiction to prescription drugs. He thinks having an addiction to alcohol is for sissies and Hollywood monkeys. We eventually learn this character’s name is Marcus and he seems to have a thing for a girl named Faith.

reading the intro you know that what you are about to read will not only mess with your head but also caress that little bit of darkness inside you

When we first meet Faith, she seems quite put off by Marcus and makes an excuse to get away from him. The romance in Toxic Romance lies within the relationship between Marcus and Faith. Although Faith seems a bit reluctant to form any sort of closer relationship with Marcus, it doesn’t seem to be putting our troubled protagonist off.
The story of Toxic Romance revolves around the goings on of Marcus and Faith. Everything in Toxic Romance is very dark and mysterious which is backed up by the gloomy, inky visuals. From the get-go you are given a feeling of desolation and despair, and after reading the intro you know that what you are about to read will not only mess with your head but also caress that little bit of darkness inside you.

Toxic Romance ends on a bit of a cliffhanger leaving you dying to know what will happen next. However it could be considered a bit controversial, as Neo-Nazism is involved in the story alongside some elements of religious fantasy.

There is plenty of violence throughout the four currently published comic book issues. I really appreciate the way the story doesn’t revolve around an invincible hero. You quickly get to know that Marcus is only human and has his own weaknesses as well as strengths.

Final Thoughts

Toxic Romance touches upon some rather dark issues such as drug addiction, gang violence and human experimentation but overall it’s the type of story that’ll leave you pondering some pretty deep questions.

The visuals are gorgeous and further convey the feeling of tenebrosity perfectly. If you’re looking for a short comic book series and aren’t faint-hearted, Toxic Romance is definitely for you.
